What You’ll Need and What to Expect

WEATHER AND CLIMATE:

Prepare for coastal environment. It is rare when the wind stops.  Temperatures between mid-40’s to mid-60’s. We fish day and night and though we don’t go on the water if the seas are up, we do fish in the surf and on the beach.  Prepare for coastal environment. It is rare when the wind stops.

GEAR YOU MUST BRING:

Knee boats – xtra tuffs are ideal, but this is where you can skimp and save money.

Full set of rain gear- we prefer bib style pants.  Helly Hanson has proven well-suited to the elements. We wear Helly Hanson work wear rain coats. This is something you will be in most of the summer, and needs to be flexible and easy to dry.

Chest waders.  Spend the extra for breathable, boot foot waders. If you chose to go with stocking foot waders, your boots cannot have any hooks that are exposed.  Either buy- and plan to wear – the gaiter cuffs, or select slip on boots or shoes.  You will come to dislike the neoprenes halfway through the season. Do not attach anything to the bottom of your boots/shoes as it will not provide any traction on the boat decks. We strongly discourage using hip waders as you will spend the majority of your time wet. Look for something like this. (note that these are bootless waders, and you WILL have to buy the appropriate wader boots/shoes to accompany them.)

A warm fall-weight coat and a light weight wind breaker that are easy to wash.

Hats or ear protection.

Sunglasses.

Bug repellent, a bug hat, and personal hygiene products are recommended.

A crew member’s license and a government issued ID. (Mandatory)

Clothes suitable for layering: Fleece, sweats, light-weight wool socks, mid-weight clothing.  Enough to make it through several days. Please do not bring anything that cannot ‘get dirty’. Laundry is your responsibility.

We have a selection of movies to borrow. We have DVD players available if you want to bring your own movies.  If you are a kindle user (ipad, Etc.,) you need to have your books and movies on your devise and not in you iCloud space as they won’t download while in Egegik.

There are no stores anywhere in the area. If you have a vice- pop, candy, beer or nicotine, you must bring it with you. If you have an illegal vice, leave it at home.

GEAR AND ITEMS WE PROVIDE:

We provide three pair of fishing style gloves. This is adequate to make it through the season. You may purchase more if you deem necessary. We prefer the ATLAS sleeved glove_ats 640 or 690.

We insist that everyone wears a life jacket while on the boat(s). We have several on hand, but if you want to supply your own, please make sure that the front has no buckles, or straps. We use zippered kayaking style vests (sold at REI).

We have a selection of movies to borrow. We have DVD players available if you want to bring your own movies.  If you are a kindle user (ipad, Etc.,) you need to have your books and movies on your devise and not in you icloud space as they won’t download while in Egegik.

The following items will be ‘checked’ out for your use. If they are not returned, in working condition, a replacement fee will be imposed. You may wish to bring your own.

A waterproof watch to be worn on your pants.  (Cheap is best.) This needs to be set to the official time.

Water bottles

A two-way Motorola. This needs to be worn daily.  We use the weather resistant style.

A  knife and sheath.

Float coat. Ours have zippers, and if not properly cared for the zippers become damaged with the sand. We will impose a replacement fee if this happens. I am still wearing one from 5 years ago so they are durable if properly cared for.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

We insist that you do not smoke in our cabins, trucks or boats.  A cleaning fee will be imposed if this rule is ignored. You must care for your butts in an appropriate fashion.  Throwing them in the water or ground is not acceptable. – Remember, we make a living off the land.

There is a beach bonfire each year that has drinking as the core activity. It is BYOB.

You will share cooking duites with your cabin mate(s). We have several cookbooks on hand, but if you have a favorite recipe please bring it with you, and let me know if it requires special ingredients (before April).

In that vein, this is a box and can food environment. Fresh food is a rare treat and will only be supplied on hand at startup.  Our frozen food is purchased in Seattle and placed on the barge in March.  I suggest if you have any dairy or fresh grocery ‘needs’ that you bring a cooler of food with you.

If you plan on taking fish home with you, you will need to bring a cooler or wetlock to the beach.  We eat salmon every couple of days at our cabin (lunch and dinner), and encourage you to do so as well. You have a small bbq at your place.
